St. Fagans: An Open Air Heritage Museum in Wales

Last October, while we were exploring South Wales, we decided to visit St. Fagans for a day out with Freddy.  Now, Neal has been telling me about how much I would love St. Fagans since I moved to Wales and once we visited – I realised why – St Fagans is an open air heritage museum with over 40 historical buildings transported and rebuilt on site.

In one visit, we were able to walk through hundreds of years of Welsh history, from all corners of the country. This open air museum really gives context to the daily life in Wales, in different professions, faiths and social backgrounds.

I loved our visit.  With each building that we visited created stories in my head of those who live on the farms, shopped at the market or worked at the mill.

The details that have been preserved are pretty incredible. The market has shelves filled with reproduction of true to era goods – it’s so charming!  From a post office to a bakery, a mill or chapel – these buildings have been painstakingly moved – brick by brick (or stone by stone) to the parkland at St. Fagan’s.

I loved our visit.  With each building that we visited created stories in my head of those who live on the farms, shopped at the market or worked at the mill.

One of my favourite buildings was St Teilo’s Church, which uncovered a surprise for those moving the church – beautiful murals which were recreated onsite at St. Fagan’s.

Dogs are allowed to visit the open air museum, just not to enter any building.  That isn’t too much of a problem if you are visiting in a group – simply take turns waiting with the pup – easy!

Another bonus is that admission is free, but donations are welcome.  Visit the St. Fagans website for seasonal opening times and new exhibits.

If you are looking for different – but well worth it – day out in Wales, be sure to out St. Fagan’s on your travel list!
