Being Awestruck by the Sao Bento Train Station in Porto

I’ll admit it, I barely prepared for our trip to Porto.  I bought tiny guidebook last minute, hoping it wou,d give us some sense of direction of how to fill our day in Porto.

And I have to admit, that when the guidebook recommended to visit Sao Bento train station, I actually rolled my eyes a bit.

“A train station? Really? It isn’t Grand Central, how special can it be?”

Let me tell you friends, it can be very special indeed.

The interior of the Sao Bento train station is covered in beautiful displays all made of tile.  The tile art tells the story of the region, and I was mesmerised.

The bright blue tiles went beautifully towards the vaulted ceiling, which had me stand there and turn in 360 degrees.

Now there are blue decorative tiles around Porto, but there is something about view these tiles in a train station.  Pretty special, right?

The Sao Bento train station is located in the heart of the historic centre, we walked by it 2 or 3 times before I realised it was in the guidebook!  Not my finest moment, but the building is unassuming without knowing about the art inside it’s easy to walk by.

There’s a reason that the train station is in the all the guidebooks! If you are visiting Porto soon, be sure to pop in and take a peek.
