Exploring a Scottish Lighthouse

Earlier this week, I started reading The Light Between Oceans which is an epic story set in the 1920’s in a remote lighthouse off the coast of Australia. Although I’m in the early pages of the book I can tell it is going to be an epic tale.

And at the heart of the book, is the lighthouse…remote and purpose filled and the lightkeeper and his wife who look after the remote rocky location. As I fall deep into the book, I have been reminded that Neal and I had a lighthouse adventure of our own when we visited the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, in Fraserburgh in July.

Durning our unplanned adventure through Scotland, we snagged a National Trust Scotland map which we used to find spots where we could visit for free as members of National Trust. Neal quickly spotted the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses as a potential spot for a visit, and I am glad we made it there as our tour included a visit to the top of the lighthouse!

At the beginning of the visit, you have the chance to see different lighthouse glass up close and personal. All I kept thinking was:

“Find the light. Seek the light. Create the light. Protect the light. Be the light.”

It was powerful to be surrounded by these instruments that generate beams of light that would save sailors for years upon years.

Then we had the tour of the lighthouse.   We claimed up the narrow curved staircase to the living quarters, and then we kept climbing… until we came across the light. Built of hundreds of pieces of perfectly fit glass, it was wonderful to see. (And how did they keep it clean? All by hand.)

Then we headed outside at the very top of the lighthouse, where we were greeted with incredible 360 views of the Scottish sea.

Friends, we were beyond lucky with the weather and we could see for miles in any direction! The visit was one of the more random locations we’ve visited, but that makes it perfectly memorable!

Travel tip from me to you: If you do plan on visiting, be sure to make a tour– that’s the only way to make it to the top of the lighthouse!

Tell me, what is the most random place you have ever visited or explored?
