Ok guys, I have a not so surprising confession: I am a complete dog mom. Freddy, our 10 year old border collie, is the center of our house with 3 dog beds, countless toys and the best spot in front of the fire. On weekends, our day trips are focused on dog-friendly options featuring the best beaches or parks so Freddy can join in on the fun.
For Valentine’s Day, I wanted to make a pup friendly treat to give Freddy as an option to shower him with a bit of love. And even better, this treat was so simple with two ingredients: Greek yogurt and natural peanut butter.
I even found a heart shaped ice cube tray, making it perfect for this frozen treat. (As a sidenote, Freddy is weird with frozen treats, in fact he loves ice cubes all year long. Anyone else give their dogs ice cubes as treats?)
I melted the peanut butter just a bit (say 30 seconds) to make it easier to spoon into the tray. After the peanut butter, I tapped the tray on the counter (to get rid of air bubbles) after I simply topped up the tray with Greek yogurt. All in all, it took about 10 minutes with a very interested bystander.
I left the treats freeze for at least three hours, and then wham…. perfect dog treats! And the verdict from Freddy was two paws up. (Sorry for the pun!)
I’ve already planning on making the treats again for Easter, a healthy treat to give Freddy and keep the chocolate away from the pup. Giving dog parents healthy treat options for our fur children is important, as chocolate can be deadly to dogs. If you are a dog lover like me, keep your eyes on Turtle Mat, who is running an awareness campaign to for healthy treat options for pups in time for Easter. [Perfection!]
Tell me, have you ever made DIY pup treats? As a crazy dog mom, I’d love to hear about how you treat your pups!
