Last Friday, I had a moment that I just had to share with you. After spending hours on a strategy for a client, I handed the 40+ paged document to my Managing Director.
He asked me one simple (and powerful) question, “Are you proud of it?”
The question actually had me stop and think for a minute. Am I proud of this strategy, that I worked on and off over a few weeks? That I researched, planned and organised with a wider team? Was I proud?
Hell yes, I was proud.
I picked up a stretch assignment, that had me stressed and trying something new. I put in hours, writing and rewriting, while working through amendments.
I was proud, and it felt good.
Many times we think pride is the same as ego or being boostful, but what if pride is really having the feeling of deep satisfaction and accomplishment. Where you want to happy dance. When you feel like you are on the top of the mountain. When you feel like you have achieved something awesome.
Pride can be empowering and invigorating and even a little inspiring. When we are proud we are more likely to keep improving, to keep trying and growing. Yes!
Now, where I fall short is giving up when it comes to fitness and getting in shape. I will start a workout routine, and oh-so quickly I loose my momentum and even give up. I know, I know. That is far away from feeling proud or accomplished or happy dancing. I need to follow my own advice and keep on going until I am proud, just like I do when I am in work.
So this week, let’s look for ways we can make ourselves feel proud and happy and accomplished. How does feeling proud change your perspective or attitude? When was the last time you felt proud of yourself?
