A BIG Surprise on Skype

Yesterday, a small box arrived at work with e-mailed instructions from Neal for me not to open the box until we were able to Skype that night.  Before I left work, I was called to say that I had a bouquet waiting for me.   This was like Neal, to surprise me…especially a few days before Valentine’s Day.  After juggling  the vase and package getting home, I logged into my computer just like normal.

After chatting about the surprise of the flowers, he suggested I open the package.  Inside, perfectly packed was an engagement ring… one that I had selected from a website and e-mailed to Neal as an idea of what I would like.  With that in mind I had expected that he would order the ring prior to my trip to ensure fit and quality.  After seeing that the ring fit well, I took it off my finger and returned it to it’s perfect packaging.  Two hours later (still on Skype), Neal asked if I would slip the ring on once more prior to us hanging up.

Seeing the ring on my finger brought a huge smile on his face…. Neal began to tell me how much he loved and cared for me, how amazing he thinks I am and that he wants to spend his life making me happy.  With that (4,200 miles away from one another) Neal asked me to marry him.  My first response, “Are you serious?”, which I actually repeated 2-3 times.  Neal nodded his head to signify “yes”, which brought both tears to my eyes and smile onto my face in one fell swoop.  Realizing that this was the moment, I quickly replied “Yes!”

The next hour or so on Skype was filled with a whole spectrum of emotions from tears of happiness to laughter.   I called my parents and told them the good news on speaker phone.   When I told my mom how Neal asked her response was, “I knew he would ask that way!  Just ask your sisters…”  She wished us congratulations and sent along her love.   Hearing the sheer excitement in my mom’s voice put the biggest smile on Neal’s face which I loved seeing.

Neal and I have been spending the day (although apart) informing our friends and family near and far over the good news.   Was he planning on proposing on Skype? Nope… But I will say, it fits our relationship perfectly.  We’ve used Skype (in one form or another) since the very beginning of our relationship.   I guess it was the perfect method for our relationship to become official for a lifetime.

I will be floating on cloud nine for a few weeks.  It looks like my upcoming trip to the UK will be in celebration our new engagement.  This girl is really single no more….
